*During the Coronavirus Pandemic there are no classes running. Please open, on this website, "more...and scroll down to BLOG" where there are child friendly yoga poses, mindfulness, breathing and relaxation exercises"
The year 2020 brings some changes to our usual list of classes.
Yoga Barb now provides private (or small) classes only. These are usually geared to children who have special concerns with anxiety, focus or other life challenges, big or small. The descriptions below relate to the format of classes provided by age, although Wee Play is no longer running. Children may participate on their own or in a family context if that seems to be more beneficial.
*Generally speaking, Roots and Wings incorporates most of the components of the other classes (in age appropriate ways) and is the most usual format requested.
One on one allows the needs or wishes of the child to be taken into consideration to create an individually planned session, regardless of the format chosen.
As well, mindfulness is an important part of each class. Mindfulness is a daily practice. We can find little things every day to put our awareness on or bring our attention to. Many ideas are offered to help build on one of the most studied and confirmed beneficial aspects of living well. If requested more formal meditation techniques can be introduced. But always putting our mind to being mindful is one of the easiest and most important ways to bring health and well-being into our lives.
Each class also includes energy techniques for calming, relaxing and healing body, mind and soul upon request. Usually there is no extra charge for this; however, if anyone is interested in learning a modality in depth and wishes to be fully trained, opportunities are available for a fee.

Teeny Yogini - Infant and Toddler (discontinued as a group class but very young children do well with this format)
This interactive programme integrates stories, fingerplays, songs and rhymes, with yoga poses for little yoginis to enjoy with their parent. Children’s developmental stages are considered and poses reflect their unique abilities at each individual’s age and stage. Along with the beneficial motor aspects of yoga, this programme also encourages speech and language development as children become snakes that HISS, cats that MEOW and dogs that BARK, as these and other sounds are introduced during yoga play. Simple massage techniques and yoga poses promote bonding and relaxation for both parent and child. A segment of “Baby Talk” is included, offering a short discussion period to help support families on this journey.
KidsYoga
Many of the elements found in Teeny Yogini classes remain an essential part of our KidsYoga programmes. Music, songs, sounds, stories, games, brain balancers, breath plays, techniques to relax and calm, imagery and imaginative expression create an engaging, playful, effective approach to yoga for the young child. We explore the world around us through yoga play, recognizing that all things are interconnected, thus encouraging a heart-centred respect for self, others and the universe. KidsYoga is an activity in which children can freely express themselves without concern for competition or comparison and are offered the gift of peace.
WeePlay Yoga:2-6 years (discontinued but many of these aspects and benefits are found in our other classes)
This 3 hour program closely follows the principles of our regular KidsYoga classes with an emphasis on activities that support speech, cognitive, social, emotional and physical development, peaceful solutions and yoga play. Children are engaged through and benefit from cooperative play and creative exploration by integrating stories, art, crafts, music and movement, breath play, yoga, and relaxation techniques. The children are further nurtured with organic and/or natural snacks and loving guidance. We offer flexibility in days and times especially for JK/SK with fluctuating schedules including those on a 6 day schedule. (A shorter session within this programme is available if 3 hours is not desired.)
Roots & Wings
This is a social-emotional development programme designed to promote calm, creative, confident kids. Through energy awareness, self-awareness, role playing, journaling, music, yoga, guided visualization, Reiki or Metamorphosis (upon request) and more, we learn to identify feelings and respond to them appropriately. We explore the world around us from a yogic perspective, recognizing that all things are interconnected, thus encouraging a heart-centred respect for self, others and the universe. This is an excellent programme for children who are overly anxious, stressed, have health issues or other life challenges. An ‘at home’ component reminds children to use learned skills daily and is a bonus for other family members, too.
TeenYoga
TeenYoga offers a more structured approach to our typical KidsYoga classes while still promoting flexibility, strength, balance, relaxation, self-awareness, self-esteem, confidence, concentration and focus. Teens are often faced with peer pressure, competition, and many other stressors during this phase of their life. Yoga flows, journaling, affirmations, and “Yoga off the mat” help support teens on their journey. This programme is in tune with the uniquely developing minds, bodies and hearts of all who attend.
Parent/Child/Family During these classes, parents and children bond, share time and yoga fun with a programme composed of similar components to our KidsYoga or TeenYoga programme, depending on the age of the children. Interaction is encouraged through partner yoga poses, partner breath plays, stories, and connected relaxation.
